Blog Action Day! (one day late...)

OK - so it's Tuesday and typically I am late! But I just wanted to post something about Blog Action Day anyway...

Seems like it went pretty well with 20,000 bloggers all posting green things! I was particularly interested in the blogs coming out of Africa and the favorites picked here and of course - my friend Brian was blogging his heart out too - this time for Britney Spears no less!

But I was very disappointed to see that only 2 people blogged about the Great Whale Trail! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!??? Grumble... it's the best thing EVER! Thanks to this one Dutch blogger and one Chinese (?? or is it Japanese??) blogger for saving me from a complete tantrum that I would have had - had nobody blogged about the GWT!

"Founding and Lost" - An American History Lesson

This short video is a reminder of the great men that founded America and what it was meant to be. It's a very interesting collection of quotes along with one of my favorite pieces of music from the movie Gladiator. I found it very powerful - funny in some parts and so moving in others that I had tears welling up in my eyes!

If you like this be sure to digg it!

Blogging elsewhere...

Group Photo

Sorry folks - I've been seriously sidetracked lately with a new blog I created specifically for a local campaign here in Bermuda to save the Botanical Gardens.

You can find it here.

I'll be back blogging again here soon but in the meantime - check out my blogroll!

Spreading the word on Flickr

RICE IS LIFE

I think more people look at my photos on Flickr than read my shit on here so I've taken to including little environmental messages and hyperlinks on my photos and today I just created this cheesy "motivational" poster using www.flagrantdisregard.com. I'm hoping I can inspire people to find out more about environmental issues through my photostream.

My Mate - MasterMike

Please let me introduce the crew member formerly known as Mike Mate and his fabulous new blog "MasterMike". My mate Mike is on the Rainbow Warrior and although he has sailed with Greenpeace many times as First Mate this is his first time as captain. He hasn't been at sea long but already his ship has come to the rescue of 3 damsels in distress as their yacht was sinking and it has been surrounded by angry Frensh Fisherman in a dramatic stand off. It's all very exciting.

Mike writes eloquently, with wit and humour and I just wanted to give him a plug on here since he truly deserves a wider audience. I love following his regular updates.

Beans means Nestlé

A taste of what's to come?

Ah man, I recently found out that Nestlé is probably buying Heinz's Linda McCartney range of foods. This depresses me more than the fact that they just bought the Body Shop since I'm not all that fussed about The Body Shop anyway but the possibility that Heinz is now selling out to Nestlé has thrown me into a state of panic. Will I soon have to boycott my beloved Heinz Baked Beans? These are like a staple food at my house (I usually try to buy the organic version). What will I put with my veggie burgers and mashed potato now?

God gave us uranium

I have been thinking about Chernobyl a lot since the 20th anniversary passed in April. I just can't believe that Prime Minister Yuri Yekhanurov, of the Ukraine, has told his people not to fear nuclear power but to embrace it because "God gave us uranium". How completely insane! There is absolutely no way to know that Chernobyl will not happen again. This was the world's worst nuclear accident, which killed over 93,000 people and has left thousands more living in nightmares. It's clear to me that nuclear power is not the answer to global warming and is simply not worth the risk. I wish EVERYONE could see this!

Tell the UN to stop promoting nuclear power and also sign the million against nuclear petition.

Every day should be "Earth Day" -- A letter to my unborn children

This letter is also dedicated to children, like my friend Sophia, who have a passion for nature.

To my dearest children,

Today is a special day that we call "Earth Day" and I have found myself awake very early in the morning thinking about you. I don't know you yet but I already love you and care about your future. I hope that you will get the same chances I have had to enjoy this beautiful planet we call "Earth". However, I am very worried that you wont. Every day it seems that parts of our planet are irreversibly destroyed.

Everyone is supposed to do something today that will make a difference to the future of the planet but I can't help feeling like it is a joke. How can we be happy setting aside only one day for the Earth when every day needs to be "Earth Day"? Sure one day is better than no day but it pains me to know that for most people the other 364 days are all "Treat the Earth Like it is Disposable" days. We can't carry on like this. We only have one planet to live on and that's it. We wont be handed another after we have completely screwed up this one and even if there is a God and he had a another planet for us, I'm sure he wouldn't let us get our filthy hands on it because he'd know exactly what would happen if he did.

When I was only 10 years old I remember reading that rain forest the size of a football field was cut down every minute or so. I thought that surely by now we would have realised how insane this is and that we would have stopped but I am now nearly 30 and the situation is even worse. The global timber industry is out of control. Deforestation has wiped out plants and animal species, increased soil erosion and flooding and contributed to global warming. The entire planet appears to be getting hotter, which is a great worry because many wonderful animals are already threatened by the temperature change not to mention the millions of humans who live in areas that will soon be flooded or hit by stronger and more frequent hurricanes. In addition to chopping down rain forest and global warming we are; creating more waste than we are able to deal with, making plans for the use of nuclear weapons we are storing that can immediately kill millions of people, ignoring poverty in the poorest countries, catching too many fish, killing whales and releasing too many toxins into the environment... to name but a few things!

I know that this all sounds very depressing and you may ask yourself how can anyone even contemplate bringing you here? I know you will be disappointed when you learn what we have done to your planet and that you will not be able to forgive us because what we have done is unforgivable.

It might seem like there is no hope at first but I can tell you that there is. Sometimes things have to become worse before they get better but it is still possible for our situation to improve and I am pretty sure it will. However, it will not be easy and you will need to fight just like a warrior if you want to make the Earth a better place. I will be fighting with you and we will not give up because every day makes a difference.

So today is Earth Day and although I will go out and try to make a difference today, I will keep on doing it tomorrow and the next day and the next day and the next day because I love you very much and I want the best for you. You will be here soon and I can't wait to meet you.

With Love
From your future mother
Lisa.
